Paula Smith - The Passionate Presenter

Passionate People

June 2011 e-newsletter

Paula Smith

'Passionate People' is a monthly newsletter from the desk of Paula Smith, Speaker, Author, Trainer and Coach.

Stop blaming the world!

BlameThat’s right; stop blaming anyone and everyone for anything that goes wrong (or right) in your life.

Is it just human nature or are we not doing a good enough job raising our children? Do we teach them to take full responsibility for their actions? What role models to they have at home to model this type of behaviour?

You can understand when a 4 year old blames their play friend for messing up their bedroom. Of course they didn’t play with a single toy, they just sat back and watched their playmate trash their room.

We frown and then help them clean up chatting to them about how it is a shared mess but it is their room and they shouldn’t be blaming their friend.

What about when a senior staff member blames their team for not doing their jobs properly this month when the department doesn’t meet the sales target? Or the young 20 year old blaming their last 10 employers for firing them? Or I heard a great one the other day. No customers want to spend money at the moment and it is causing their business to go broke and how does the government in this country expect anyone to make a quid?

Trying hard to empathise with them I asked a number of questions.
Did they have a marketing plan? What are they doing about spoiling their existing customers? Have they looked at raising their prices? And what innovative or interesting things had they implemented into their business in the last 12 months?

Their expressionless face told me all.

When you get a cold for the 4th time this year do you blame your infected neighbour who visited last week? Or do you decide to try and get more sleep and look at adopting a healthier diet and lifestyle?

When everyone you work with is depressing? Do you blame them for depressing you or do you decide to keep smiling, communicate better, bring in some flowers and organise an after hours get together? Or even leave to find a more compatible environment?

And when business is down do you blame the GFC (still) or do you decide to be progressive and adapt your business to the changing needs of today’s customers and evolving business environment.

So next time you have a whinge and blame the world look in the mirror and think is it really everyone else’s fault or think back to what Mum told us and take full responsibility for ourselves and our actions. And when things are going great also take responsibility and give yourself a bit fat reward.

What is happening in Paula's world

Well the word is officially out. Not only my newsletter friends know about the new Australian qualification in town. The Diploma of Presentation Skills. It is officially in the market.

Feedback on the qualification has been awesome. Surprisingly, many are not booking into our open courses but asking for in-house programmes so all their trainers, managers or sales people can also complete the course.

Even some impressive top Australian speakers and trainers love the programme so much have asked if they could deliver the programme at some stage.

The ones who have already enrolled in the open programmes in Perth - One in July and another one scheduled for September download calendar - are very excited to be the very first in Australia to achieve the qualification. I have assured them of some acknowledgement and reward for jumping up and saying pick me first.

Be the firstWe still have a few vacancies in the open programme at the Burswood in July so do think about joining us. The week is going to be sensational. I guarantee, you will be a more confident, unique presenter when you leave the programme.

Knowledge and skills you can use immediately and transfer to any vocation.

And if that is not enough to convince you, how about the great people you will meet, the great food we will eat and the inspiring discussions you will get chance to participate in.

Don’t forget you can also host one for your organisation which means I come to you (Anywhere a car can drive or a plane can fly) Canada or Greek Islands would be my preference please.

View the flyer or email me for more information.

If you are not quite ready to take your presentation skills to the next level and would like to be a workplace trainer my next Certificate IV in Training and Assessment starts on 20th June.

There are 5 places left. Email me now for a full pack.

Presentation Skills Tips

Presentation skills are a must have skill in today’s competitive business world.

Tip Number 14.

Prepare for 100 pieces of information and deliver 3.

What? you say, that is an awful amount of work for nothing.

When we listen to a trainer, speaker, expert, sales person we believe they are an expert in what they are presenting. If you only know the exact information you are to present, what happens if you get a curly question from the audience? What if you get asked to present for a little longer as the next speaker is running late? what if someone in the audience disagrees with a statement and you need to provide some additional research to support your case?

When the best presenters in the world get asked to speak, they have to decide what to leave out rather than always thinking what to put in their presentation.

Information OverloadIf a client asked me to speak at a conference on Adult Education for instance. I have been studying it for over 20 years, can I deliver all of my 20 years experience and research in one hour. Heaven’s know but I have seen some presenters try. 500 slides, a fast talker and a brain dead audience.

Look at the target group

What are the organisational outcomes for this conference

Choose one or three very clear key messages and go deep

It is always about quality not quantity. One great piece of information that the group can transfer into the workplace is so much more relevant than 100 pieces that you have skimmed over. Remember though, you have those other 100 pieces tucked away just in case you need to think on your feet and wow your audience when a question is asked about some research 10 years ago. Well you just happen to know all about it. Then you mention you could come back at another time to present it to them.

Before you know it, you’ve been invited back

The Inspiration Factory

Have you ever needed a bit or a lot of inspiration?

Or struggling with a gift for a client. One of my favourite book shops (that don’t just sell books) is the Inspiration Factory in Subiaco.

I was driving down Hay Street a while ago and noticed the shop was gone.

Horror I felt, I just could not imagine such a wonderful business to close its doors but low and behold, not only are they still around but they have moved into fantastic new premises 339 Churchill Avenue, Subiaco.

I urge you to visit their website www.theinspirationfactory.com.au

Not only can you spend hours looking at their books and inspirational accessories and gifts but they also host some great events with authors, coaches, professional speakers and some other inspiring individuals.

So go and get your dose of Inspiration
